Ministers are seeking to reverse a series of amendments made to the Safety of Rwanda Bill by the House of Lords
made to the Safety of Rwanda Bill by the House of LordsBut a survey of public opinion finds that most people – including a majority of Conservative voters – think the bill should be amended or scrapped altogether, rather than passing in its original form.
The bill returns to the Commons on Monday with MPs expected to vote to strip out all the Lords amendments, which ministers argue would stop the bill achieving its aims because they would open the door to months of fresh legal challenges. Among those who voted Conservative at the last general election, 55 per cent want the bill amended or scrapped while 37 per cent support the Government’s position.
Focaldata polled 1,044 British adults on the policy last week. Sunder Katwala of British Future said: “The Rwanda scheme has split public opinion, for and against – but what this research finds is a consensus that if you want to deem Rwanda safe, you first have to check that it is.
