ASML is a lesser known, but critical player in the global semiconductor supply chain. ASML’s position as a key player in the semiconductor industry means the Dutch company has been caught up in the ongoing tensions between the US and China. The White House has imposed increasingly strict restrictions on US companies looking to supply advanced chipmaking tools to China, while lobbying the Netherlands to do the same.
Wennink says ASML is currently unable to ship EUV machines to China. Instead, the company ships less advanced DUV machines, allowing China to account for around 15 percent of ASML’s 2022 sales. Both Japan and the Netherlands are expected to follow the US with chipmaking sanctions of their own in the coming weeks, theWennink’s forecast is not shared by everyone in the industry.
