The San Jose City Council this week opened the door to build Breeze of Innovation, a proposed landmark structure, in the popular downtown park.
A major makeover could be in the works for Plaza de Cesar Chavez, the urban park that’s the cultural heart of downtown San Jose and already home to some of the city’s most popular events. This week, the San Jose City Council opened the door to making it the site ofBut that wouldn’t be all.
But now the interest has turned to reimagining Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Visitors annually swarm the island plaza for Christmas in the Park and the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, but the park — with its iconic fountains and a key location across the street from the San Jose Museum of Art and the Signia by HIlton hotel — is massively underused.
The ideas floated Tuesday included expanding the park’s footprint by eliminating parking and maybe even a traffic lane on Market Street surrounding it. There could be a new stage at the park’s southern end and other features that would honor the famed labor leader for whom the park was named in 1993.
Parks Director Jon Cicirelli provided a reality check about the city’s capacity to fund a major makeover, noting that St. James Park has a $65 million renovation plan on the books and the city only has $10 million for that. There are also proposals to reimagine Guadalupe River Park, an effort being supported by SPUR and the Knight Foundation.
