Major changes to Covid testing rules kick in
A total of one million cases of the variant are expected by the end of the year, Health Secretary Sajid Javid says.
At its peak in July, the number of self-isolation alerts sent in England and Wales in a week was just under 700,000, having huge impacts on staffing levels in workplaces. Omicron is expected to become the most dominant variant in a matter of weeks, meaning the current self-isolation rule would have seen several hundreds of thousands in self-isolation every day.
