The Walking Dead: Dead City is heading into the back half of its inaugural six-episode season. The series has thus far proved to be one of The Walking Dead universe’s strongest offerings yet, doubling down on the tumultuous relationship between Maggie and Negan even as it explores the new location of post-apocalyptic Manhattan.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Unsurprisingly, Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan continue to shine as Maggie and Negan, respectively, each building off of the years of work they put into the original series.
Can Maggie and Negan Ever Really Be Friends? The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: Dead City have intentionally worked to look beyond Negan’s evil past, exploring Negan’s marriage and establishing a new family for the character. However, this has never much affected Maggie; The Walking Dead: Dead City made it clear early on that her anger toward Negan is still very much intact.
On a structural level, The Walking Dead: Dead City also succeeds based on the hero/antihero relationship of Maggie and Negan. Without an incredibly satisfying—and likely long—arc to support a massive change, future seasons of the show would be well-served to continue exploiting the tension between the two characters.
The Walking Dead: Dead City episode 4, “Everybody Wins A Prize”, premieres Sunday, July 9th at 9pm ET on AMC.
