Big do on the M6 earlier
Motorists were stuck in traffic on the M6 near Carlisle for hours this morning after a lorry burst into flames.
As emergency services tackled the fire, they closed the motorway for safety. It was reported that the lorry kept reigniting, meaning traffic was delayed further. The blaze, on the northbound carriageway between Junction 41 B5305 at Catterlen and Junction 42 A6 at Carlisle South happened at around 10.30am. The road was closed while emergency services tackled the blaze.Images from the scene show huge plumes of smoke billowing into the air as emergency services tackle the flames. Following the blaze, the wreckage of the white truck could be seen lying at the side of the road.
It has been confirmed that all roads have now reopened but there is still some traffic in the area from the earlier delays. A spokesperson for National Highways said earlier: "2 lanes remain closed at this time pending recovery and clear-up works. It's also likely that resurfacing works are required."
