China's first Lunar New Year since the lifting of zero-Covid restrictions means families are free to reunite from around the country for the first time in 3 years. But these reunions are raising fears of rising infections in more vulnerable areas.

Fan, who hadn’t been home for Spring Festival since 2020, said it was the first time she had driven that far. Jiao Yahui, an official at the National Health Commission, said the government’s Covid strategy for rural areas had two main focuses. “There is a relatively comprehensive hospital in town, but it is still incomparable with the medical resources of the city,” she said.
