Lula sworn in as new Brazil president, as police detain man with 'fireworks and a knife'

After the swearing-in, Lula drove in an open-top Rolls-Royce to the Planalto palace to don the presidential sash before a crowd of 30,000 supporters, while tens of thousands gathered to celebrate on Brasilia’s esplanade.

One banner seen at the ceremony which was carried by a man dressed as Lula read: “Love has won over hate. The leftist defeated far-right Mr Bolsonaro in the October 30 vote by less than two percentage points – after he alleged Brazil’s electronic vote was not reliable.He has also said he will bring illegal deforestation of the Amazon to a halt and sought support from political moderates to form a broad front and defeat Bolsonaro, some of which he has appointed to serve in his Cabinet.
