In the lead-up to England’s Euro 2022 semi-final against Sweden on Tuesday evening, Bronze reflected on that World Cup defeat to the USA three years ago, and admitted that she had been in the form of her life at that tournament.
Since returning to Manchester City in 2020, Bronze has struggled with injury. The defender admitted to playing most of the 2020-21 season with a knee issue and after the Tokyo Olympic Games last year, Bronze opted to have surgery on her knee, the fifth surgery of her career.
In last week’s quarter-final against Spain, Bronze seemed to have been targeted by her opponents — closed down quickly and aggressively by the Spanish front line. She lost the ball 12 times as a result, three times in her own half.was 74 per cent, her second lowest for England since the Arnold Clark Cup game, also against Spain, in February.
In a friendly against Belgium in the lead-up the tournament, Bronze gave the ball away more than any other player in the England side, 16 in total, four in England’s own half. Bronze wasn’t pressed too intensely in that game as Belgium sat back and absorbed pressure, but one of those losses of possession led to a Belgium shot. Her crossing accuracy in that match was just 17 per cent .
