Louisiana Attorney General JeffLandry has ordered an investigation into a major investor-led coalition that aims to fight climate change through the financial sector.
Landry’s office on Tuesday announced a “multi-pronged” effort focusing on the Climate Action 100+ Steering Committee, specifically scrutinizing Franklin Templeton and the California Public Employees' Retirement System. The investigation will look into whether the groups breached their obligations to investors by prioritizing climate initiatives. The move is yet another foray by the GOP against the environmental, social, and governance movement, or ESG.
Franklin Templeton has some $1.5 trillion in assets under management, while CalPERS, the country’s largest public pension fund, had more than $440 billion in assets under management as of last year. The Washington Examiner asked Climate Acton 100+, CalPERS, and Franklin Templeton for comment but didn't immediately receive responses.
Last week, Rep. Andy Barr introduced legislation that would prevent big banks from refusing or limiting financial services to certain businesses, such as those in the fossil fuel industry.

Oklahoma attorney general to recommend clemency for GlossipOklahoma's new Attorney General Gentner Drummond is planning to ask the state's Pardon and Parole Board to recommend clemency for death row inmate Richard Glossip. Such a move is highly unusual for the state's top prosecutor's office, which always urges the board to reject clemency. But Drummond says in a Monday letter to the five-member board that he has serious concerns about the fairness of Glossip's trial. Drummond previously asked the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to vacate Glossip's sentence, but the court declined to do so. Glossip has long maintained his innocence in the 1997 beating death of Barry Van Treese, the owner of the hotel where Glossip worked. He is scheduled to be executed on May 18.
