The lost Yorkshire rivers buried beneath our cities and unseen for centuries
You send it underground through a series of culverts. A century later when all who remembered it as an open course have died, it disappears from memory and is effectively 'lost'.
So why would anyone want to bury an attractive natural feature? Because during the industrial age our rivers transformed from clear stretches teeming with wildlife to black, open sewers choked by sewage, chemicals and general waste. * Exploring underground rivers is dangerous and should only be attempted by professionals and expert, properly equipped explorers.
Porter Brook The brook begins at Clough Hollow, on the eastern edge of the Peak District, and flows through Endcliffe Park and Sharrow before it disappears into a series of culverts near the city centre. Porter Brook then merges with the Sheaf parallel to Turner Street under what is now Sheffield Station.
The stream, now part of a sewer, was once fed by several springs in the valley, hence the name Springvale. Some of the springs still rise in Springvale Road residents’ gardens although the water now ends up in the waste pipe beneath the street.Leeds Meanwood Beck This stream runs open along Meanwood Valley Trail but it doesn't stop there.
Sadly, Stoney Rock Beck is absent from an 1890 OS map and appears to have been culverted for its entire length.Bradford Bradford Beck The section of this river that once ran open through Bradford city centre was known as the 'Mucky Beck', hardly surprising given it was one of the filthiest rivers in Britain at the time.
