So this Halloween season, I wanted to find something truly unknown, a little gem hidden in the archives and lost to memory until now.newspapers one recent evening, I saw a January 1920 headline in the San Francisco Chronicle about a haunted piano drawing curious paranormal enthusiasts from around the region. Night after night, visitors to a home in San Leandro were treated to the discordant sounds of someone tripping along the keys of the living room piano.
"Scores of investigators have puzzled over the piano" for months, the Chronicle reported, adding,"On occasions too numerous to mention a piano left in the house has been heard to play weird melodies.” The home belonged to a rancher named J.Y. Simms but had become a rental after his death, the Chronicle reported. Left in the home were many pieces of his furniture, including the haunted instrument. Rumors spread that Old Man Simms was back to tickle the ivories — which comes across as either an unintended or pointed critique of his classical training.
This ghostly drama was not disclosed to the McHenrys, a Washington couple who moved into the home in late January 1920. As husband and wife settled into bed for the night, the piano downstairs began banging out its song. After grabbing a gun and a flashlight, James McHenry crept down the stairs. Sure enough, the piano seemed to be playing itself. Baffled — and perhaps emboldened by being armed with a deadly weapon — James did what no one had thought to do: He opened the piano lid.
