Loss of Y chromosome might be a new factor underlying the higher severity and mortality of COVID-19 in males, finds a study published in GenomeMedicine

]. However, there might exist an additional, so far unidentified male-specific risk factor, predisposing men for a life-threatening disease course of COVID-19 and LOY could be a suitable candidate for such a factor.

We hypothesized that LOY in cells from the myeloid lineage might be a male-specific risk factor linked to the development of critical COVID-19 disease. We concentrated our study on 211 critically ill males that were treated at ICUs in Sweden.
