The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot has defeated Toni Preckwinkle in a runoff to become Chicago’s next mayor on Tuesday and will be the first openly gay black woman to lead the city.

Lightfoot, 56, who was an assistant U.S. attorney before she entered private practice, has never held elective office before. Lightfoot came in first in the February election that saw a record high of 14 candidates vying to succeed Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who did not run for re-election.
