Amazon's LordOfTheRings TV series to film in New Zealand
The upcoming show, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels, has already started pre-production in the country that was also home to the feature films. Production in Auckland is expected to begin in the coming months.
Landing the expensive streaming series represents a significant win for New Zealand. Not only did Amazon pay around $250 for the global rights to the property, insidersthat the total spend for the project could hit $1 billion, once production budgets, visual effects and the cast and creative teams are accounted for.
"As we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff," said showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.
Set in Middle-earth, the TV adaptation of the iconic property will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s. The theatrical adaptations, directed by Peter Jackson, earned a combined gross of nearly $6 billion worldwide and garnered a combined 17 Academy Awards, including best picture. The new series will see J.A. Bayona direct the first two episodes and also serve as executive producer, alongside his partner Belén Atienza. Other exec producers include Lindsey Weber (
