White’s departure gave 21-year-old Devin Vassell a starting job, made 22-year-old Tre Jones the primary ballhandler on the second unit and freed regular playing time for teenage rookie Josh Primo.It also appears to have turned Walker loose as a bench Firestarter.
“I tell him every day, ‘We need your aggressiveness off the bench,’” forward Doug McDermott said. “He’s a really talented player. If his head is in the right place, he’s going to be consistent.”It is why coach Gregg Popovich wasn’t quite ready to anoint Walker the new Mr. Consistency after his recent spate of quality games.
In certain situations, Walker is able to use his plus-athleticism to get to the rim and his uncommon body control to finish difficult layups once there. The 11th overall pick in 2020, Vassell is averaging 14 points as the Spurs’ new starting shooting guard in the seven games since White left town.Popovich has been pleased with how Vassell had adapted to his new place in the pecking order.
