While long COVID is fairly common, it remains a mystery to researchers. More than two years into the pandemic, it’s still unclear what causes symptoms to persist over the long term.
The severity of someone’s COVID-19 infection is also not a predictor of whether they will be a long-hauler. Many long COVID patients had a mild-to-moderate illness, and many are otherwise in good shape, said Dr. Fidaa Shaib, an associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine who works in the college’sFortunately, many long-haulers make a full recovery within a few months. But there are exceptions, Shaib said.
One of those patients is Anna Voelter, 50, who contracted COVID-19 near the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The resident of Salado, a small town north of Austin, developed pneumonia about five weeks after recovering from her initial illness. Since that time, she’s experienced a range of symptoms including weakness, headaches and tingling in her fingertips.
Long haulers’ symptoms vary, but some of the most common are fatigue; shortness of breath; cough; muscle pains or aches; sleep issues; and difficulty thinking or concentrating, also called brain fog. Many patients also develop depression, anxiety or PTSD after they’ve recovered. And many are fearful of contracting the virus again, Shaib said.
Being alone in the ICU was traumatic, Peña said. When she did see doctors and nurses, they were covered head-to-toe in personal protective equipment to avoid contracting the virus. Now, she can’t even watch a hospital scene on TV, because the noises transport her back to her own experience.Michael Wyke/ContributorPeña is also dismayed by the cognitive changes she has seen in herself. She’s always been sharp, so she gets upset when she has difficulty thinking or concentrating.
