Two Gary schools and a Hebron Middle School teacher were honored last week at the Indiana Educational Excellence Gala, an event sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education.
The 21st Century Charter School in Gary received the Excellence in College Readiness award and $250,000 for helping students earn a credential before graduating from high school.
He said the award money will go toward its new Alyce J. Butler College and Career Center, which is creating nursing and construction programs. It will also be used for providing college tours for students. She said the school of 368 students received its state STEM certification last year. To tap into student interests, she said students fill out surveys to share their interests and then they’re exposed to STEM-related topics.
