A militant group in Gaza, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, announced that Israeli soldiers were being held captive as the Israeli Defense Forces refused to comment on unverified videos circulating of hostages allegedly being taken by Hamas. “We confirm in Al-Quds Brigades that now... we have many Zionist soldiers who are prisoners in our hands,” PIJ said in a statement. Separately, a Hamas-affiliated media outlet, Shehab News Agency, has said that 35 Israelis have been abducted since Saturday morning.
Richard Hecht had earlier Saturday refused to comment on the potential for captives, saying, “We are fighting, we are not discussing it.” Israel has for years oriented its military strategy and invested in sophisticated border technology to thwart cross-border incursions. In 2006, Hamas held Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit captive, and released him only five years later after Israel agreed to release more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.
