At least 36 people have been confirmed dead in the wildfire that struck Lahaina, Hawaii. Live updates:
Drought coverage in Hawaii more than doubled in the past week, with 14.5% of the state now classified in the moderate or severe categories. Much of central and western Maui, which includes where fires have occurred, is covered by drought conditions that first emerged in June.
The building drought this summer means Hawaii could be at risk for more wildfires into fall, especially when stronger winds are present. An outlook from the National Interagency Fire Center calls forA mass bus evacuation for residents and visitors in West Maui will resume at 8:30 a.m. local time, according to a social media post from Maui County. Buses will pick up passengers at a shopping area called Whalers Village in Kaanapali, on the north side of Lahaina.
Most roads in Lahaina Town remain closed. According to Maui County officials, Honoapiilani Highway is open only forThe weather patterns that charged the Lahaina fire have eased Thursday. Hurricane Dora has moved further away from Maui, reducing the pressure gradient between the storm and high pressure.
