One Piece should have featured Koby more.

The One Piece live action series on Netflix has given Koby an important role, but the manga has unfortunately not featured Luffy's first rival in the series as much as it should have. This represents a rare flaw in the usually masterful storytelling of mangaka Eiichiro Oda, who, however, has approved everything that happens in the Netflix show, meaning that perhaps he regrets not giving Koby the spotlight.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The first person that Luffy met on his journey to become the Pirate King was a young boy named Koby who worked as a lowly crew member on the pirate Alvida's ship. However, Koby aspired to one day join the Navy and bring criminals to justice. Despite the obvious incompatibility between Luffy and Koby's goals, the former inspired the latter to follow his dreams.

One Piece Should Have Featured Koby More Unfortunately, while Koby has grown a lot as a Marine, much of his journey has happened off panel. This was first done through a series of cover stories showing him training with Garp and Helmeppo . After this, however, Koby would just pop up at certain events like the Summit War and the Reverie, showing off the new skills he has developed over the course of his marine career.

If the manga had shown more of Koby's journey parallel to Luffy, his growth could have been much more satisfying. This could also have raised interesting questions about the value of working inside the legal system to help people as opposed to working outside of it as Luffy does. The One Piece live action show changes this, providing a glimpse at what this dynamic could have potentially looked like, as it expands more on Koby's training during Luffy's time in East Blue.

While it is too late for Oda to go back and incorporate Koby more into the series, at least he is getting more of a spotlight in the most recent arc. Koby's growth in the manga has been impressive not just in terms of raw power: he is clearly as beloved as Luffy, and both are showing the potential to inspire people around them . Hopefully, this is a sign that Koby will rise to become more of an important rival to Luffy than he has been.
