LIV golfers can play in the 2023 Masters as Augusta National will make no changes to its invite criteria for the upcoming tournament, organizers said Tuesday. ✍️ BFQuinn

There are several ways for golfers to qualify for the Masters Tournament. The 50 leaders on the Final Official World Golf Ranking for the previous calendar year or the 50 leaders on the Official World Golf Ranking published during the week prior to the current Masters Tournament earn invites to Augusta, Ga.

Winners of The Players Championship over the past three years also earn an invite, and all Masters champions have a lifetime invitation.“Regrettably, recent actions have divided men’s professional golf by diminishing the virtues of the game and the meaningful legacies of those who built it. Although we are disappointed in these developments, our focus is to honor the tradition of bringing together a preeminent field of golfers this coming April,” Masters organizers said in a statement.

“We have reached a seminal point in the history of our sport. At Augusta National, we have faith that golf, which has overcome many challenges through the years, will endure again.”This shouldn’t be overly surprising. Any sort of ban or blackballing of LIV players would dilute the field in Augusta. For an event that considers itself the preeminent tournament in the world, the notion of watering down its own competition seems like a non-starter.

Moreover, if Augusta National were to take a hard-line stand against those playing on LIV, it would open itself up to litigation and a much closer look at, oh, perhaps its own memberships’ links and ties to both the Saudi kingdom and the Public Investment Fund. This decision — simply honoring the existing criteria and not gerrymandering qualification standards one way or another — feels like the cleanest way to handle things at the moment.
