Every year on the Eid al-Fitr holiday, many residents of Sudan's capital Khartoum visit their relatives outside the city. This year though, those who can are making a frantic escape from the city, driven out by war

In Washington, the State Department said without elaborating that one U.S. citizen had been killed in Sudan.

U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said no decision had been made on airlifting U.S. government staff out of the country, but U.S. forces were positioned near Sudan to assist. Reuters reported on Thursday troops were sent to a U.S. base in Djibouti. Khartoum resident Mohamed Saber Turaby, 27, had wanted to visit his parents 80 km from the city for Eid.

Army troops brandishing semi-automatic weapons were greeted by cheers on one street, a video released by the military on Friday showed. Reuters verified the location of the video, in the north of the city, but could not verify when it was filmed.
