The field of candidates on the ballot for LA mayor and other city offices continued to expand Thursday, March 10, with the city clerk qualifying more people.
Los Angeles city mayor met the deadline for submitting nominating petitions with a sufficient number of signatures to appear on the June 7 primary ballot.Each candidate for mayor, city attorney, controller and the various City Council seats had to submit petitions with at least 500 valid signatures. And those who submitted at least 1,000 valid signatures avoided paying a $300 filing fee.
A tentative field of 27 candidates filed paperwork by Feb. 12 to run to succeed termed-out Mayor Eric Garcetti in the June 7 election, but as of Tuesday afternoon, only six candidates had qualified. By Thursday night, that number had grown to nine, with the city clerk qualifying Mel Wilson, a real estate agent and former Metro board member; community activist Gina Viola; and business owner John “Jsamuel” Jackson.Rep. Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles.Real estate developer Rick Caruso.
Jesse N. Forte, who identified himself in paperwork as an “astronaut” but whose LinkedIn account indicates that he seasonally participates in simulation tests for a space architecture and engineering firm.
