Many people are not even aware they're entitled to support
Each year £15 billion is unclaimed in Department for Work and Pension benefits according to the poverty charity, Turn2Us. Millions of people depend on state benefits and MoneySavingExpert founder, Martin Lewis, is urging anyone earning under £30,000 or less to do a 10-minute benefit check.
People are on benefits like Universal Credit or PIP for various reasons, including whilst they are looking for work or to help top up a low income. On a recent Money Show, Martin told his viewers that "it's a tough time for many people’s pockets as we know, yet up to seven million of you are missing out on benefits and state help that you are entitled to."
He added: "And don’t think ‘it’s not me’, the benefits web can stretch as high as some people with £50,000 of family income.” Although people who have reached state pension age do not qualify for Universal Credit, they should instead check their entitlement to other state benefits as they could qualify for pension credit if they earn less than £187 a week, reports The Daily Express.Or if they have a disability or health condition, they could qualify for Attendance Allowance.
These DWP benefits also allow claimants to receive a free TV licence if they are 75 or older, as well as hundreds of pounds to put towards energy bills.
