Since 2004 Plastic Crimewave has used the Secret History of Chicago Music to shine a light on worthy artists with Chicago ties who’ve been forgotten, underrated, or never noticed in the first place.
“When I got to Memphis, it was the first time I had ever seen a bus, or a street car. That was where I had my first hot dog. I didn’t know what it was!” Alexander. “I used to go down on Beale Street to hear people playing music outside, but I wasn’t old enough to get in the clubs.” A club called the Place at 63rd and Champlain held a talent show every Sunday, and Alexander’s new band made a habit of playing a song at it each week. One of the numbers they had the most fun with was titled “Let It All Hang Out,” though unfortunately it wasn’t the 1967 garage-rock hit by the Hombres.
Alexander started to build a name for himself with his high-energy performances, bitingly distorted guitar tone, and deep, gravelly vocal style. He’s a big personality, with a lively sense of humor and an amiable, extroverted demeanor that makes him a natural at working the crowd.
