Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley announced a formal campaign, while Senator Tim Scott announced an exploratory committee earlier in April.

Trump, who served as president from 2017 to 2021, is again seeking the presidency after losing to Presidentduring the 2020 presidential election. He announced his presidential campaign last November to a background of concern from some Republicans that the party should move on from him after the GOP's underwhelming performance during last year's midterms and amid the former president's ongoing legal troubles.

He has received support from many Republican lawmakers, including Graham, who lost to Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential primary. The South Carolina senator has backed his former foe over candidates from South Carolina. Senator Tim Scott, who has served alongside Graham, announced an exploratory committee earlier this month, while former South Carolina Governorformally announced her campaign in February. Both are viewed as longshot campaigns against Trump, who currently holds a strong lead in the polls.
