Lin-Manuel Miranda comments on the possibility of Encanto becoming a proper Disney franchise: 'I don’t know what form that takes. I don’t know if that’s an animated series. I don’t know if that’s a second movie.'

Disney might have plans to expand Encanto into its own franchise, but Lin-Manuel Miranda doesn't know what those plans are. Released in theaters last November and then on Disney+ in December, Encanto centers on Mirabel Madrigal, the only member of her talented family without a special gift. Though her relatives can do incredible things like heal aliments with food or talk with animals, Mirabel was left empty-handed when her time came to receive a gift from the Madrigal's house.

Upon its arrival in theaters, Encanto was greeted with glowing reviews and solid box office numbers. It earned $223 million worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing animated movie of 2021. And yet, much of Encanto's success can be seen in how it resonated with fans. From every song hitting the Billboard charts to countless fanworks populating the internet, Encanto has developed a following that perhaps could only be rivaled by the Frozen mania that swept the world in 2013.

No. I’m literally learning from you that Chapek said that. I talked to him and said, “I know there’s a world in which this casita lives in a theme park and we get to actually walk through it in real life.” And that’s really exciting, but the other byproduct of all these characters is that there’s a lot more folks want us to explore and a lot that’s being explored in fan art all over world. I don’t know what form that takes. I don’t know if that’s an animated series.

Most likely, any plans Disney has for expanding Encanto into a franchise are still in the early stages of development. Miranda's soundtrack has been such a success, it's unlikely Disney would truly move on without him, especially not after his song"Dos Oruguitas" earned an Oscar nomination. Encanto's success was such a pleasant surprise that a sequel might not have been in the cards before, so there were no plans in place.

Though things might only just be getting started, it would be smart of Disney to move quickly with any Encanto sequel or spin-off it might be considering. Passion for the movie is high right now, and catching this wave of enthusiasm could be critical in turning this into an enduring series. At the same time, Frozen had little trouble winning over audiences again with a sequel that arrived six years after the original. When a movie is really, really good, that kind of love sticks around.
