How a washed-out college basketball player turned self-described ski bum came to spend one dream-making season with the Spurs in 1991-92

“I wasn’t mature, wasn’t prepared for what it took to play Division-I college basketball,” Copa said. “I became disinterested in the game. I had lost my way.” A few days later, Copa turned in his notice at the shuttle company and drove back to Milwaukee, where he began working out at Marquette again. The Copas chose Austin to be near Molly’s parents. Copa’s basketball jones had been rekindled, however. He wasn’t ready to give it up again.Why not write a letter to the general manager of each of the state’s three NBA teams, he said, and let them know your services are available?Except in Copa’s case, that’s almost exactly how it worked.
Copa was making what they called a “Deadhead Run” — he had dropped passengers off at the airport and was returning to Vail with an empty bus — and had the radio on to stay awake.While listening to not-all-that-much younger men live out his once-upon-a-time dream, Copa began to experience a combination of road rage and regret.
