Forecasters say some of the heaviest bands of snow could generate thunder and lightning, but if it does happen, it won't be widespread.
“That’s certainly a possibility, given the setup,” Staarmann said. “There certainly could be some thunder in some strong snow bands, but it wouldn’t be a widespread thing.”
“Lightning forms because of the charge in the clouds where the precipitation is generated,” Staarmann explained. “With a snowstorm, there are lots of ice crystals,” and those crystals could trigger enough energy needed to create the static charges that spark lightning. And thunder is the sound we hear when “the heated air expands explosively, creating a shockwave as the surrounding air is rapidly compressed,” NASA and NOAA say in
