“Out on the street, everyone was running, and parents were holding children so they wouldn’t get lost,” she said. “When we reached the shelter there were a lot of people. I was holding onto Olesia just so I didn’t lose her in the crowd. Therapists also came to help traumatised children, including Olesia, who had not been outside for two months.
For the past 11 months since Russia’s invasion, Yulia, 49, has been forced to stand in cold, damp, dark shelters with her two terrified children for up to 24 hours, as explosions rocked Kharkiv.
