We spoke to award-winning Austrian-born composer walter_mair about crafting the Liaison score and diving into the thrills of the AppleTVPlus series:
Apple TV+ has just released its first-ever French-English language series in the tight thriller Liaison. Starring Vincent Cassel and Eva Green, Liaison is a gripping story of espionage, drama, and love, with buried secrets bubbling to the forefront at nearly every turn. The multi-language series will be told across six episodes, with a high-stakes tale told across a slew of countries and from a variety of perspectives.
This show stands on its own, of course, but is also a strong entry as a part of the thriller genre. Did you look to other thriller scores for inspiration, or were there certain beats of the genre that you felt you had to hit? Walter Mair: Only in the sense that the first approach was more orchestral heavy. After we recorded the orchestra, the idea came in that maybe we should mix it differently. In the mixing stage, I brought in the electronics and tweaked the orchestra. For instance, I ran the orchestra through effects, vintage analog effects, and blended those elements together. What came out was a very cohesive, organic/electronic score.
Then, you take those pristine recordings, and you run them through Distressors, distortion, plugins and hardware effects. You feel like, "Should I be doing that?" but then you listen to the results and there's some gratification. It's justified to do that, because the sound that comes up in the end has this gnarliness.
I saw that you were at the red carpet premiere for the show in Paris. I know composers are usually separate from the filming and everything, so how was it seeing Vincent and Eva after scoring the show?
