Two drag events sponsored by the Community Church of Chesterland, will happen Saturday, April 1, as planned. Organizers are asking supporters and allies, without tickets, to avoid the event and exercise their free speech rights at a prayer vigil Thursday.

CHARDON, Ohio – Despite the potential for conflict, two drag events sponsored by the Community Church of Chesterland, will happen Saturday, April 1, as planned. Those who don’t have tickets to the drag brunches at Element 41 restaurant on Chardon Square or the drag story hour at the Community Church of Chesterland are asked to stay home. Both events were envisioned to be fun, while raising money for the church. The potential for fun is being lost by the advertised attendance of protesters.

“We want to give people who want to come out in support, a safe opportunity to show restaurant owners and the LGBTQ+ community that we’re here, we love them and we’re not abandoning them,” says McMaster. “This isn’t us versus them. It’s Nazis attacking our community,” she says. “I want our law enforcement and security focusing on stopping and controlling the hate groups who will be here, not breaking up fights. I also wanted to give people who want to come out an opportunity to express support ... on Thursday.”

For those attending the story hour, McMaster says she wants it to be a “trauma-free event for children in the building.” She’s arranged a face painter and planning music that will drown out any protesters when the drag performers are not reading their favorite childhood stories. The four drag queens participating in both events are shaken, she says. “None of them signed up for this, going from entertainers to activists putting their lives and bodies on the line. They’re scared, but they’re committed.”
