Teenaged Juliet was initially played by a man when “she” first kissed Romeo. Some speculate that “drag” comes from script notes to “dress as a girl.” During the early 20th century’s, gays and lesbians of color dressed up as the opposite sex at “drag balls.” It especially caught on with the guys and has been part of gay culture ever since.
I have never seen a drag queen wear as little clothing or gyrate as much as a typical born-female pop diva or grab their crotches like so many straight male pop singers. But drag shows aren’t my thing. I only watch them at pride fests when a friend is performing. However, I did live with a drag queen around 20 years ago. Perhaps he was more of a drag princess, given he was only 19 or 20 at the time.
