Lewis Hamilton calls on Saudi Arabia to improve human rights record

Lewis Hamilton has reiterated that he feels uncomfortable racing in Saudi Arabia and as he called for the country toafter it debuted in 2021, staging the second race of the season at the Jeddah Corniche circuit.And Hamilton has used his platform to discuss the country’s human rights abuses

Organisations such as Amnesty International have accused Saudi Arabia of ‘sportswashing’ its reputationracing in Saudi Arabia for the first time, and has said his ‘position is still the same’ ahead of the country’s second F1 race. “We don’t decide where we go, and I think we’re duty bound to try and do what we can,” the Mercedes driver said.

“Ultimately it’s the responsibility of those in power to really make changes, and we’re not really seeing any. So we need to see more.”Hamilton also commented on a story from The Guardian regarding the case of Abdullah al-Howaiti, who was arrested at the age of 14 in 2017 and sentenced to death aged 17.“There’s not really a lot I can say that’s going to make any difference,” he said. “It’s obviously mind-blowing to hear the stories.
