Re: “We recommend — Abbott for Texas governor,” Oct. 23 editorial.

Having been a daily reader of your paper since 1955, I was not, however, surprised. You have favored the GOP for many years. What surprises me is your failure to acknowledge that the GOP of yesterday no longer exists. The modern GOP is now an authoritarian group apparently devoted to the dictates of one man.

The majority of Texans want to ban assault weapons except for law enforcement and military use. Abbott has refused to consider that, nor will he consider raising the age to buy weapons. Instead of gun control, Abbott has advocated unrealistic building security and DNA kits for parents to use in case they need to identify their children.

Texas has prospered. Jobs are plenty, if you want to work. Taxes are low comparatively speaking, but rising with the influx of people. Quality of life is way better here I believe.Rich Rigsby, WylieWomen are second-class citizens in Texas. That’s not good for business. We are not safe from rape and guns. Our children are not safe in schools. That’s not good for business. We don’t know that we will have power on hot or cold days. That is not good for business.

Maybe the editors think corporations will continue to flock to a state that refuses to use immediate gun control to save the lives of our babies. Placating scared parents by sending home DNA kits in advance of the next mass shooting doesn’t obscure the truth. What a glaring admission that more mass shootings are coming under the current state leadership.
