This was an unusually sad Fourth of July. On a day designated each year to celebrate how our forefathers declared independence from England, choosing democracy over monarchy, we are living through a national nightmare. For example, the U.S. Supreme Court has taken away the 50-year right of women to choose, vacating the well-accepted doctrine of “legal precedent” governing the court’s decision making.
The U.S. Constitution does not provide an avenue for any state to leave the Union, but that could be remedied by an amendment. However, in any divorce, there is the issue of settling the community property, including over $28 trillion in debt, about $86,000 per individual. You will have to arrange financing for that, without the federal government’s perfect credit rating and low interest rates.
As a constituent of Congressional District 3, I encourage my member of Congress, Van Taylor, to support bipartisan climate solutions starting with the Growing Climate Solutions Act, which pays farmers to implement climate-friendly soil management practices. Soil is one of our main carbon sinks that sequesters carbon from the atmosphere.

Leave personal reproductive decisions - whether on abortions or vasectomies - to individuals: Letter to the EditorLetter writer Kelli Mancuso’s modest proposal, suggesting mandatory vasectomy to prevent pregnancy, takes a thoroughly American approach -- if states can deprive women of their reproductive rights, they should also deprive men of theirs. However, the proposal perpetuates a race down the ladder of personal rights and bodily autonomy. Instead, let’s leave decisions about abortions and vasectomies to individuals and their doctors, writes Dr. Daniel Brustein, of Cleveland Heights, in a letter to the editor.
