Re: “Cowboys’ problems unfixable — Team structure causing issues won’t change soon. Or maybe ever,” by Tim Cowlishaw, Wednesday SportsDay column. Best. Column. ...
I usually enjoy reading Cowlishaw’s columns, but this reasoned rant on the Dallas Cowboys “unfixable problem” was absolute sports gold.
Teams that take chances and are innovative seem to be rewarded by the NFL. Dallas has done that in the past — Tom Landry, Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt, Jimmy Johnson and a younger Jerry Jones who personified risk-taking and innovation and snagged the Lombardi Trophy five times. And as Cowlishaw wrote, how many GMs would still be working with the record of failure the Cowboys GM has produced?
Then again, maybe focusing on Jerry Jones will actually increase ratings. One can hope because this year more than any other I can recall, fans are losing just that — hope.Growing up in Dallas with Roger Staubach as my childhood idol, I will always be a Cowboys fan. But after another disappointing end to the Cowboys’ season on Sunday, I was able to assuage some of my disappointment by watching the Australian Open tennis tournament.
