Letters to the Editor: Niles-Maine District library contract.
Residents were well aware of the need for change at Niles-Maine District Library, including a fair budget and a union contract with library employees. That’s why they voted to elect a new library board of trustees that promised to fulfill both of those priorities.Employees don’t yet have a union contract in place.
Since January 2021, inflation has gone up 14%, but our pay has risen just 2.8%. Some of us make less than $15 an hour. Some work two jobs to make ends meet. And some of us have given 10 years or more in service to the library yet earn no more than new hires. Like many, we have children, older relatives and spouses who depend on us. We are paying our own student loans, our kids’ college tuition, our rent or mortgage and all the other rising costs of living. We formed our union to have a seat at the table and voice in how the library operates.
But simply sitting at the table is not enough. We have been in negotiations since December 2021. It’s time for management to settle a fair contract with fair wages—now.
