Letters to the Editor for Thursday, March 23
Demonstrators protest at a March for our Lives rally outside San Antonio City Hall last year. If"woke" means to be aware of issues, and to separate fact from fiction, then several readers say they don't see the problem. My English teacher told me once, never start a letter with an apology, but I have to this time. I have heard the term “woke” and “anti-woke” so many times lately in the news it confused me. Like most authors, I “Googled” it.
So, I guess I am slightly"woke." Kind of like a bear that has been in hibernation for too long and needs intellectual substance. I believe our students in this fine country should study, in depth, the American Revolution, the Civil War, the emancipation of slavery and the civil liberties guaranteed by our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
I hope they learn that things were not always great. I am"awake" to the people who want to remove books from our libraries that our children might read. Don’t those folks understand, if you ban a book, they will read it? Don’t you remember"Peyton Place?" You can’t protect the next generation by denying it.I was not clear on the meaning of the term “woke” and could not understand its occasional pejorative or negative use.
The term is more expansive now, including gender, historical and economic issues. Supporting"wokeness," perhaps the best phrase is … “the truth will set you free ,” which is also inscribed on the main building of the University of Texas at Austin. Truth and factuality are what ethical journalism is about, as with our Express-News, and defines a good person. Learning how to discover truth was the purpose of research essays we wrote in high school or college.
When truth flounders, and citizens do not separate fact from fiction, democracy fails and tyranny ensues. I am committed to integrity and therefore “woke.”
