Future police officers should be screened on attitude, the ability to exercise authority and for the ability to deescalate conflict, says a reader.I am a retired school psychologist with 20 years experience working in public and private schools, and mental health clinics. After retiring, I pursued a Master of Divinity and pastored two congregations for 12 years.
Police misconduct situations are not due to insufficient training. Police aggression and abuse are due to poor hiring practices. Policing failures usually involve a citizen who fails to follow the orders of an officer. The officer then makes the critical mistake of escalating rather than de-escalating the situation. Then we have a tragedy.
