Politics and education were the big topics in this week's letters, as readers weighed in on a heated mayoral campaign, banned books and more.
A March 5 editorial about book banning said, “The fact that we're writing this editorial is a sad testimony to society's willingness to surrender our liberty over indifference or fear.”

Rep. Ingoglia can claim he belongs to the"Party of Lincoln" but, frankly, it's not a really big distinction. At the time, a significant majority of white Americans — including Lincoln — were opposed to racial equality. Ranked choice voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference and would handle both scenarios at the same time. In the first scenario, if no one gets a majority of votes, you can then re-allocate the second-round vote for the least candidate vote-getter and a 50% plus one winner can easily be declared. In the second scenario, you would automatically generate a runoff election by your second or third choice.
As indicated in the March 5 editorial, “Don’t proclaim liberty while banning books,” a trained school media-specialist will determine which books should be banned. The problem is that what a trained school-media-specialist considers inappropriate may not be what you or I consider to be inappropriate.
