Letter: 'If the Legislature were truly sincere about protecting children, they would protect the thousands of children in Utah and across the country who suffer long-term sexual abuse — abetted by the clergy.'
Their claim is that they’re “protecting children.” To completely understand how disingenuous that is, take this example:
In 2020, Utah’s legislators had the opportunity to protect children from ongoing sexual abuse by passing HB90, eliminating the loophole in the law that permits clergy to protect sex abusers who confess to them. Instead, the powerful LDS and Catholic lobbies were able to squash the bill, and Utah’s Legislature literally allowed the sexual abuse of these children to continue unabated. Utah’s Legislature has, to date, done nothing to remediate the situation; instead, they allow the suffering of these children to continue. Real suffering. Real children left unprotected by the law.
Churches would rather protect the abusers than the children and Utah’s Legislature is complicit in allowing this ongoing abuse. This is a real, nationwide problem; yet Utah and other Republican states continue to target a small, powerless group of people in order to score political points. If the Legislature were truly sincere about protecting children; they would protect the thousands of children in Utah, and across the country who suffer long-term sexual abuse — abetted by the clergy. Instead, it’s easier to target a group of people who don’t have billions in the bank to pay lobbyists of their own.Randall Yeates, South Weber
