“Things are to be determined,” Young said. “We will see how fast he can build back up. We want to make sure we give him enough at-bats to get ready. We just want to make sure he’s 100%. He came into camp in great shape and was playing great baseball.”If Taveras is not ready to open the season, the simplest move may simply be to plug Bubba Thompson into center field.
“Bubba is really talented,” Young said. “His defense is a little bit ahead of his offense, but we’re confident in his ability to be a contributing member of our team. We recognize he’s still young and developing, but he’s ready for the challenge, whether that’s on opening day or some time during the season is still to be decided.”
