The fashion world is mourning the loss of an icon. French fashion designer Emanuel Ungaro died in Paris on Saturday after suffering from weak health for the last two years. He was 86.
His fashion house, which he founded in 1965, announced the passing of their leader via Instagram on Sunday. “Today, [we] mourn this immensely talented couturier,” they captioned a black and white photo of Ungaro in French. “He will remain in our memories as the master of sensuality, color and flamboyance.”
His career began after a move to Paris in his early 20’s from his native Aix-en-Provence. By the age of 25, he was working as a designer for Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga before moving on to a new gig with Andre Courrèges. By 1965, he opened his eponymous fashion house. He was a powerful player in the fashion industry for four decades.serve as artistic director for a very short time.
Throughout his lengthy and respected career, Ungaro saw his highly coveted garments decorate all of the most revered fashion models including Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista inside the pages of every big fashion magazine. He is also credited with dressing fashionable First Lady Jackie Kennedy.
