After persevering through a 'traumatic' injury that nearly cost him his athletic career,...

Inscribed on David May’s parking spot at Legacy Prep are the words “End of an Era.” David is the last of four Mays boys to go through the small private school in Magnolia.

The jarring that resulted when David’s feet returned to the court after he put in a layup set off consistent, searing pain, frustration, doubt, and emotional and physical turmoil, reaching a terrifying breaking point when he tackled a running back and came up lame in the Lions’ TAPPS Division III regional final against Bay Area Christian on Nov. 20, 2021.

“Now I play each play like it’s my last,” David said. “And I play and have fun. I enjoy playing and having fun. That makes things a lot easier.”The fractures he endured from the basketball game caused a “transgressional segment” in the lower back in the L3 and L4, nerves providing sensation to the front of the thigh and inner lower leg while also dictating hip and knee movements. The Mays were initially told by doctors that David could play with the fractures.

Audra said doctors told her there used to be only one way to fix the issue. A patient would be put in a brace and the back would heal as best it could. But it meant no more contact sports for the patient, or anything that required twisting of the back. The Mays family opted for surgery. The seven months that followed were David’s most trying of his young life.Eyes sparkling. Always wearing a smile. Always quick to laugh.Oftentimes, McDonald and David gathered in the coach’s office to talk and pray. David searched for answers, hope. McDonald tried to offer reassurance, faith.

He gained about 25 pounds over those seven months due to the methodical, subtle nature of permitted activity.
