Legacies creator Julie Plec reveals why it was so important to have Joseph Morgan reprise the role of Klaus Mikaelson in the series finale.
The creator of Legacies has explained how the reappearance of Klaus Mikaelson in the series finale was instrumental in Hope's overall arc. Legacies is the third series in the universe of the Vampire Diaries, following Hope Mikaelsen as she goes to a school for the supernaturally gifted following the death of her father Klaus in the finale of The Originals. Over Legacies season 1 to 4, Hope has taken after her father, becoming a sort of prickly anti-hero struggling with deep-seated issues.
In the middle of season 4, The CW announced that Legacies would be ending during a huge swath of cancellations that claimed nearly a dozen series. Although the announcement was abrupt, the show's creators were given advance knowledge that the end might be coming, so the team was able to craft a Legacies finale that tied up their loose ends.
"Hope had been carrying such tremendous survivor’s guilt. It has informed everything about her — her inability to love too fully or act too freely. There’s this adult responsibility that was put on her shoulders attached to the death of her family, more specifically the loss of her father. The Necromancer told her that Klaus would never find peace until she did, so if we had to end the show without being able to give her that closure, I would have been devastated.
Whether or not the Vampire Diaries universe has truly ended on The CW, it was clearly very important to Plec that Hope experienced this moment with her late father. The Legacies finale is the first and only appearance that Morgan has made on the spinoff show, so not having him ever connect with his daughter in her later life certainly would have been a shame for the series and left things feeling somewhat unfinished.
That said, Hope may have a chance of returning to the Vampire Diaries saga in some capacity. The executive producers of the series have already stated that they are having conversations about further Vampire Diaries series after the abrupbt cancellation of Legacies. While these shows may opt to focus on new characters that are merely in the same world as the original cast, there may be a chance for Hope to appear.
