Premier League football is king and if you didn’t already know that, this transfer window will have rammed the idea home. Regardless of which club it might be in the top flight, whether they play in a small stadium, have barely any trophies in their cabinet or look like circling the drain next May, footballers want to be there.
Parachute payments can soften the blow for the Whites, but if they are to remain as prudent as Daniel Farke suggests, they will be swallowing the realisation they cannot compete with what’s being offered above, even in the lower reaches. The exposure, status and billions of eyeballs on the Premier League are seemingly impossible for players to resist either.
Like a lot of goal-hungry clubs in the second tier, Leeds were keen on Archer, but it was always going to be hard for their negotiations to get off the ground when the Blades are flashing that big-league wonga. Paul Heckingbottom’s side are among the favourites to be relegated and seem to be battling through off-field issues at ownership level, but none of that fazes an Archer or a Gustavo Hamer, another United liked.
It’s the Premier League, it’s the status, it’s the financial rewards and it’s what Leeds, as a promotion-chasing second-tier side, are competing against on new signings and retentions all the way to 11pm on September 1.
