Paul Matthews made the comment to Leeds City Council at a scrutiny meeting

If we run an unreliable service, rightly we get criticised. If we put the rates of pay up to what could be argued are market rates, we can’t put up our fares because we’d get criticised. So we are in a no-win situation."
"People on oil rigs don’t do it for minimum wage. They get paid good money because it’s a hard and dangerous job and they’re well rewarded for it." But Mr Matthews replied: "I think it’s unfair to quote the national profits of First. In West Yorkshire, during the pandemic we didn’t make any money. And certainly at the moment we’re making insufficient margins to be able to reinvest in West Yorkshire."
