The weather service has moderately dialed back its snowfall projections.
Most of Sussex County could fall in the 6 to 8 inch range, with a few spots possibly seeing higher totals of 8 to 12 inches, the service said in its latest briefing. Western Passaic County is also seeing a similar range, the service said. Portions of Morris and Warren counties could see as much as 4 inches of snow. The weather service has issued winter storm warnings for those four counties.
Snowfall total projections are much lower outside those counties, though the weather service is calling for snow showers as far south as Atlantic County before the storm winds down. The heaviest snow will fall later Monday night through at least Tuesday morning with hourly snowfall rates of as high as one inch at times, forecasters said. The greatest snow accumulations will be for elevations above 1000 feet.
Some heavier bands of snow could pivot southward towards parts of the I-78 corridor late Monday and Tuesday, with the greatest chance for accumulations remaining in the higher elevations, according to the briefing. Accumulating snow for our northern areas, and strong winds Tuesday. Snow totals have come down some, and the greatest snow accumulations will be for elevations above 1,000 feet.
